Charles Dickens Bleak House II

Bleak House opens in the twilight of foggy London, where fog grips the city most densely in the Court of Chancery. The obscure case of larndyce and Jarndyce, in which an inheritance is gradually devoured by legal costs, the romance of Esther Summerson and the secrets of her origin, the sleuthing of Detective Inspector Bucket and the fate of Jo the crossing-sweeper, these are some of the lives Dickens invokes to portray London society, rich and poor, as no other novelist has done.

In a unique creative experiment, Dickens divides the narrative between his heroine, Esther Summerson, who is psychologically interesting in her own right, and an unnamed narrator whose perspective both complements and challenges hers. Издание на английском языке.

Чарльз Диккенс Bleak House

Charles Dickens' Bleak House is held to be one of Dickens' finest novels. It contains one of the most vast, complex and engaging arrays of characters and sub-plots in his entire canon. Many of this intricate novel's subplots deal with the minor characters and their ties to the main plot. The novel revolves around a long-running litigation in England's Court of Chancery, Jarndyce v Jarndyce. This case is about a testator who made several wills. The litigation consumed years and at great expense, is emblematic of the failure of Chancery. Dickens' assault on the flaws of the British judiciary system is based in part on his own experiences as a law clerk, and in part on his experiences as a Chancery litigant seeking to enforce his copyright on his earlier books.

Bleak House is not certainly Dickenss best book; but perhaps it is his best novel. Such a distinction is not a mere verbal trick; it has to be remembered rather constantly in connection with his work. This particular story represents the highest point of his intellectual maturity. Dickens ninth novel was intended to illustrate the evils caused by long, drawn-out suits in the Courts of Chancery.
